Online Book Launch: Behind the Scenes

With all the work related to the book release of my debut novel “Inexplicable Distances” going on, I never knew how to unveil it. Or if I wanted to unveil it at all. But who knew things would unravel the way they did, and I would end up scheduling an event for it!

The online launch event was for the e-book version of the book. Initially, there were no plans of having it at all. I mean, it was there… lurking in some corner, but I never thought of it actively. Just the evening before the e-book release date (June 27, Monday), one of my friends suggested me to go ahead with it. That was the motivation that I was probably looking for. Immediately the work started which began with the search for a place to have the online launch (since a calm place was needed with no disturbance). Though it was last minute, the place got finalized by 9 pm. Afterwards, there were not much left to be done… or rather not much with external dependencies involved.

The next step was to finalize the event platform. Few different platforms were checked to host it conveniently. A lot of confusion and multiple test-runs later, it was decided to have it with two different platforms: Zoom and Instagram. Then the design phase started, which involved searching for copyright free images (or purchasing them in case it was not free), preparing posters, invitations, and the works. Multiple versions were prepared so that there will be an option to choose the final version. That was just a regular case of me being me: create options (as many as possible) to create a backup of a backup. You know just in case something disastrous happens… like a supernova affecting our atmosphere! One must always have backup. And why not? Who would forego a chance to create more confusion for the already confused mind!

Anyway, the design step ended with the selection of the finalized poster and invitation. Everything was immediately circulated through channels which were available (etiquette-wise) at that hour of the day. (It was around 2:30 am.) The rest was done in the morning of the book release day; and it took a considerable amount of time than was expected. Having taken care of all the basic stuff, it dawned upon me that the event content was still undecided. I approached one of my friends to be the host. I was not expecting she would agree to it, with just 3 hours left for the event. But she did, which was a great relief. I briefed her about the event, and everything was sorted. The event was better than my expectations. A big sigh of relief for that! All's well that ends well... though this was just the beginning.
